Bad News for Shortcut Seekers
I’ve never been passionate about building websites, web design, or sitting inside an autoresponder account, tweaking settings because some update decided to rearrange the furniture again. That part of online marketing never excited me, and if I’m honest, it still doesn’t.
What did grab me was email itself — not the technical gymnastics, but the leverage behind it. The first time it really clicked that one email could reach thousands of people while I stayed exactly where I was, in the same chair, in the same room, with my life still intact, the whole game changed. That contrast mattered more to me than any feature or funnel.
Back then, people idolized the speaking circuit. Fly out to another city. Stay in a hotel for three or four nights. Get on stage. Shake hands. Fly back exhausted. It sounded impressive, and maybe it was for some people, but every time I looked at it closely, all I saw was time leaking away. I didn’t want applause — I wanted control.
Control over how much money I could make. Control over how much time it took. Control over not having to choose between building income and being present for my family.
I’m a father. Two kids. A household that depends on me. I was raised with this belief that if you succeed, you don’t just win for yourself — you pull others up with you. That sense of responsibility never shuts off, and it doesn’t get lighter just because the numbers improve. So whatever business I built had to support that reality without turning me into someone who was always gone.
That’s why I’m willing to do work I don’t love. I don’t wake up excited to think about email deliverability or segmentation logic, but I understand exactly what happens when emails stop landing and lists go cold. I understand what breaks in a business — and in a life — when reach disappears. So I do what needs to be done, or I bring in people who genuinely enjoy that part and figure out how to make it work, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Most of the time, my kids would be home while I was working. They can be building things on the floor downstairs, drifting in and out of my space. Sometimes something they were making would fall apart, and they’d ask for help. I’d close the laptop and deal with it. Not because I was being noble, but because I designed my work so I could. That wasn’t a perk or a nice side benefit. That was the entire reason I built things the way I did.
You don’t need to be passionate about every task in this business. You need a reason that’s stronger than resistance. When that reason is clear, motivation stops being something you chase, and procrastination doesn’t stand a chance.

Most people believe success is a tradeoff. Money or freedom. Ambition or health. A real life or real income.
Once that belief sets in, the ceiling drops immediately.
I remember arguing with a guy who was making good money on paper and still drowning. Bills ate everything. Stress filled the gaps. At some point he said, proudly, “I’d rather be happy than rich.” He thought he was being wise. What he really said was, I’ve already decided how far I’m willing to go.
Here’s the truth: that sentence is just permission to stop solving the problem.
People don’t choose happiness over money. They choose comfort over responsibility. Because the moment you believe you can have both, you’re forced to figure out how, and that’s uncomfortable. That’s where excuses run out.
I’ve never accepted the idea that success has to punish you. I was willing to change how I worked, what I worked on, and how long it took — but I wasn’t willing to shrink the definition. I didn’t want income that required disappearing. I didn’t want freedom that depended on luck. I wanted both, so I built around that constraint.
The real mistake isn’t wanting too much. It’s settling for definitions that quietly box you in.
So stop asking which side you’re supposed to pick. That’s the wrong question. Ask what kind of system would let you keep everything that matters — and what you need to stop tolerating to build it.
