I’ve got a confession to make…

I suck at listening.

At least, that’s what my wife tells me.

And honestly? She’s right. My brain seems to shut off the moment she starts talking. A tiny distraction comes in, and boom—I’m mentally somewhere else.

It’s not on purpose. It just happens.

And it got me thinking…

If this happens in my personal life, how many people are guilty of the same thing in their business?

Spoiler alert: Most people don’t listen when they sell.

They think selling is about talking. If they just keep rambling, their prospects will get hypnotized into pulling out their credit cards.

But that’s NOT how sales work.

See, people don’t buy because you talk them into something.

They buy when they feel understood.

And, the easiest way to make someone feel understood? Shut up and listen.

It’s the cheapest and most powerful sales tactic in the world. And yet, almost no one does it.

Want proof?

I once had a mentor—Ross Bowring—who was the slowest talker on the planet. This guy took forever to get a sentence out.

And yet, he was one of the most influential people I’ve ever met.

Why?

Because he listened. Really listened. And when he spoke, he simply repeated back what you just said, making you feel completely understood.

The result?

He convinced me to pay him thousands of dollars for coaching, then got me to give him a percentage of my business profits.

That’s the power of active listening.

Most people are so used to being ignored that they instantly trust you when they finally feel heard.

So, if you want to close more sales, here’s my million-dollar advice:

  • Ask a question.

  • Shut up and listen.

  • Repeat what they said.

  • Ask another question.

  • Rinse and repeat.

You’ll be amazed at how quickly people go from being skeptical to begging to work with you.
