Most people think the best clients are hiding somewhere. Like there’s some secret, ultra-exclusive club where all the high-ticket buyers hang out, sipping champagne and deciding where to spend their money.

I used to believe that too.

I thought there was some magic place where all the “good” leads gathered, and if I could just find it, my business would explode overnight.

Turns out that’s a total myth.

The inspiration for this realization? A little story about a whale—Moby Dick.

A few years ago, a movie came out called In the Heart of the Sea. It’s supposedly the true story that inspired Moby Dick. The film follows a crew of whalers desperate to fill their ship with precious whale oil—the 19th-century equivalent of black gold.

After months of failure, they finally meet a broken, half-mad sailor who whispers the ultimate insider tip: 

  • Go off course 

  • Sail far enough

  • And you’ll find a hidden bay overflowing with whales.

They take the risk, find the bay, and sure enough—whales as far as the eye can see. A whaler’s paradise.

Until Moby Dick himself shows up and wrecks their ship.

Now, what does this have to do with marketing?

Everything.

Because most marketers chase whales the same way. They think big buyers are hiding somewhere, just waiting to be “discovered.” But the truth is, the best buyers aren’t in some secret location. They’re hiding in plain sight—often disguised as desperate people.

Yep, you heard me right.

Some of the most serious, action-taking buyers aren’t the ones rolling in cash. They’re the ones who need a change so badly, they’ll do whatever it takes to make it happen.

Think about it:

  • We do nothing to prevent a problem.

  • We do everything to fix one.

People won’t save for retirement, but they’ll scramble to figure it out when they hit 65. They won’t invest in their health until a doctor gives them a terrifying diagnosis.

And in the make money online world?

The bus driver who’s sick of working 60-hour weeks, the single mom drowning in debt, the restaurant manager who’s one paycheck away from disaster—these are your best buyers. Not because they’re rich, but because they’re motivated.

And if someone is truly motivated to change their life, they’ll find the money. They’ll sell their old car, max out a credit card, borrow from family—because the pain of staying where they are is worse than the risk of investing in a solution.

So stop looking for a magic lead source. Stop assuming that your best buyers have a six-figure income.

Your “whales” are already swimming around you. You just have to attract them with the right message.
