FROM MY WORLD

The Losers in Your Business

I started this whole thing with a $10 hosting bill I couldn’t even pay for. I had to use my mom’s credit card because I had no other choice. There was this company, Global Domains International, that said they’d pay a dollar for every referral. So I chased that dream for three and a half years. Nothing worked. But what really stuck with me wasn’t the failure. It was how I kept thinking I needed more. More signups, more customers, just more of everything.

Years later, I made the same mistake with hiring. I’d talk to someone for twenty minutes, think, “Yeah, I like this person,” and hire them on the spot. Two months later, they’d disappear, or I’d have to let them go. Every time someone left, it felt like pulling out wires while the whole thing was still running. After doing this ten times, I finally stopped and asked myself: Why am I treating people like clicks? Why am I not making sure they’re the right fit before bringing them in?

So I decided to use what I already knew from marketing. When someone wants to buy traffic from us, they have to go through a bunch of steps—questions, videos, filters. If someone gets annoyed and leaves, that’s actually good. It means they weren’t the right person. So I started doing the same thing with hiring. First, I gave them a typing test. Then I asked them to send a YouTube video answering, “Why should we work with you?” After that, I had them do two hours of real work, but only after an hour of training. I paid close attention to how they learned, how they took notes, and how they worked.

Out of twenty people who applied, only three made it through. And the one or two I actually hired? They stuck around for a long time. These are the people who, if they quit today, I’d really feel it. That’s when I realized the win wasn’t about having more people. It was about filtering for the right ones.

It’s the same thing in marketing. You can have a thousand leads, but that doesn’t mean anything. The hundred who actually pay attention matter. The ten who take action matter even more. And the six who actually produce? They’re the ones who can help you build a huge business without you having to go through thousands of people.

Qualifying people is what really lets you grow. Just having more people only hides the waste.

MINDSET MAKEOVER

The Funnel Before The Funnel

Most people think weak results mean their offer is broken, but that’s almost never the issue. What’s really happening is simpler and far more frustrating: your name hasn’t yet earned the right to be believed. Jerzy Kosinski proved this in the 1930s when he submitted the same manuscript twice — one copy under his real name, and another under an alias. Publishers fought over the first version and threw the second one out without reading a page. Nothing changed except the name on the cover, yet the outcomes couldn’t have been more different.

That’s exactly what happens online. You can craft flawless logic, stack testimonials, and polish your pitch until it gleams, and prospects will still push back because they don’t recognize you. To them, you’re not a trusted source; you’re just another stranger making claims. Early on, you’re not losing to the competition — you’re losing to invisibility, which is much harder to diagnose and even harder to outrun.

This is where most marketers get trapped. They start tweaking colors, rewriting headlines, or moving buttons around as if rearranging the layout will magically erase the credibility gap. It won’t. Authority isn’t built through design tweaks; it grows through consistency. When you show up in the same lane, with the same message, over and over again, the market eventually stops wondering who you are and starts assuming you’re worth listening to.

Your name is the funnel before the funnel, and until you strengthen it, everything else is uphill.

FOR YOUR LISTENING PLEASURE

The M-M-M Triangle with Darcy Juarez

Darcy Juarez joined me to expose a blind spot almost every business owner has: they think they follow up, but they really don’t. She broke down Dan Kennedy’s 10 Commandments and showed why “always follow up” isn’t just a best practice — it’s the engine that drives direct marketing. The part that grabbed me was how she uses the message-market-media triangle to filter out low-probability prospects, so only the right people ever hear from you.

This episode matters because once you stop trying to win over the whole world and start speaking to the small slice that’s actually qualified, everything gets simpler — your conversions, your retention, even the way you write. Darcy’s been in the trenches for 18 years, and the examples she shares are the kind you can swipe and implement the same day.

Give it a listen and find out exactly where your follow-up is losing strength.

CURATED READS

Tribes by Seth Godin

If you’ve ever wondered why some businesses build loyal followings while others fight for every click, Tribes gives the answer: people don’t want products — they want leaders.

Godin makes one point that’ll smack you right between the eyes: You already have a tribe, you’re just not leading it yet.

Once you get this, your marketing shifts. You stop begging for attention and start attracting people who were quietly waiting for someone like you to step up.

Read this book if you’re ready to stop chasing customers and start rallying a movement.
